National Hedgerow Week 2026: Helping the mighty hawthorn!

ONLINE – Zoom
Hawthorn is the backbone of UK hedgerows, making up around 70% of their structure. They are also a well loved as a tree, with frequent mentions in literature, art and folklore throughout history.
Join Charlotte Benham, The Tree Council Science & Action Research Manager, for an introduction to an ongoing hawthorn research project seeking to better understand the resilience of – and threats to – this iconic hedgerow species.
Charlotte will be joined by project partners, Forest Research and Fera Science, to share insights and reveal the citizen science opportunities.
Also on the panel will be Adam Curtis, The Tree Council’s Senior Officer – Community Planting Projects, to share his love of hawthorn and tell us more about hawthorn’s rich history and its folklore associations.
This event includes an audience Q&A.
