Communities mark 50 years of National Tree Week
27th November 2025 • PlantingNorth East communities mark 50 years of National Tree Week with thousands of new trees
This year marks the 50th National Tree Week, and the North East Community Forest is proud to enter its fifth planting season—continuing its mission to grow greener, healthier landscapes across the region.
Over the past four years we’ve achieved remarkable progress:
- 540.37 hectares of new woodland created – healthy habitats for wildlife and people
- 516,918 trees planted – tackling climate change
- 29,701 meters of hedgerow – protecting biodiversity and supporting wildlife corridors
- 554 sites and projects – transforming countryside and cities
- 167,635 tonnes of CO₂ captured by year 30
- 265 community events with volunteers planting trees
- 6,071 people engaged – from volunteers to local communities.
During National Tree Week (Saturday 22 – Sunday 30 November), the NECF is supporting a series of tree-planting activities across the North East, working with partners to make them happen. These events will see more than 2,500 new trees planted, uniting communities to celebrate the vital role trees play in our environment and wellbeing.
Across North East England towns and cities, volunteers are teaming up with councils and conservation partners to create greener, healthier spaces for generations to come.
“National Tree Week is more than just planting trees – it’s about planting hope for the future. Every tree we put in the ground strengthens our landscapes, supports wildlife, and helps tackle climate change. We’re proud to see so many people across the North East coming together to make a lasting difference.”
— Ross Weddle, Chairman of the North East Community Forest
“These events show the power of community action. By working together, we’re creating spaces that will benefit residents for decades to come. Trees are a gift to our towns and cities – improving air quality, reducing flood risk, and making our neighbourhoods more beautiful. The trees we plant today will play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of our children and young people, ensuring that future generations inherit healthier, greener places to live, learn, and thrive ”
— Cllr Dr Juna Sathian, Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport, Newcastle City Council
