Connecting the region

The North East Community Forest spans 1,246 square miles (3,235km²) across North East England. Our core area includes Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland and key urban and coastal parts of County Durham.

This area forms the heart of our work, where we focus on woodland creation and other nature‑based projects. To strengthen connections, we sometimes support projects up to 10 miles outside our main boundary.

Our delivery area

Most of our work is funded through the UK Government–funded Trees for Climate grant, which supports projects within our core delivery area.

We can also consider sites just beyond this boundary, and in exceptional cases, locations further afield where there is clear environmental, community or strategic benefit. To help assess out‑of‑area proposals, we use a 10‑mile “halo” around our core area. For more detail, see our Trees for Climate page.

If your project sits outside this halo, there are many other grants available for schools, community groups, landowners and farmers. Visit our Funding Opportunities page to explore alternatives.
